I think part of the move away from Hoss centric episodes also had to do with the return to more of an action format in the 67-69 period, and the chemistry between the characters of Candy and Joe. They worked well together, particlualry in the action episodes, whereby the Hoss character became more of the elder, cerebral brother like Adam had been in the earlier years. Dan did a great job with those episodes, and this trend just continued into the "Jamie" years. Would have been very interesting to see Dan in season 14, particluarly in part 2 of Forever. Were those 'action" scenes kept in the script, or did Mike add them for Joe(and Candy to a degree).

You have to recall the Viet Nam war was escalating by 1970 and all network shows were mandated for violence. This was one thing that could not be brought back in Bonanza and it shows in the last 3 years.

I've always thought 'Forever' would have been better with Hoss. Especially the later scenes...angry, hunting the killers, full beard...would have been cool.
